The bakers lead Afer to the forum along with Clemens and Grumio.

First baker: "The Pompeians favour Afer."

Second baker: "Afer is better than Holconius. We believe in Afer."

Third baker: "Clemens! Grumio! Holconius and his friends are in the forum."

Clemens: "I see Holconius and his friends. Hooray! I see women, I see maidservants, I see girls... Alas! I see Caecilius! Caecilius is standing with Holconius! I am returning to the villa! Grumio, wait!" (Grumio flees.)

First merchant: "Holconius is a noble man."

Second merchant: "Holconius is better than Afer."

Third merchant: "We merchants favour Holconius." (The bakers and merchants gather. They are angry.)

First baker: "Holconius is a donkey; you are all donkeys for believing in Holconius."

First merchant: "Afer is a fool; you are all fools for believing in Afer."

Second baker: "Friends! The merchants call us 'fools.' We are not fools; we are very brave."

Clemens: "We have torches."

Second merchant: "Friends! The bakers call us 'donkeys.' We are not donkeys. We are stronger than bakers. We have great torches." (Merchants and bakers fight in the forum.)
