To the House
To the Villa
In the city, there was the greatest fear. Ash was already falling thicker. Flames were everywhere. After Caecilius and the others entered the city, they were seeking the villa, but the journey was difficult because many Pompeians were filling the streets. Nevertheless, Caecilius was bravely pushing through the streets. The cloud was now very thick. Suddenly, Barbillus shouted, "Hurry to the villa! I cannot go on." He immediately fell to the ground, unconscious. Clēmēns carried the merchant to the nearest temple.
"You did very well," Caecilius said to his slave. "You saved my friend. I promise you freedom." Then Caecilius left the temple and ran to the villa. Clēmēns remained in the temple with Barbillus. At last, the merchant caught his breath.
"Where are we?" he asked.
"We are safe," Clēmēns replied to Barbillus. "The goddess Isis has saved us. After you fell to the ground, I brought you to this temple."
"I thank you very much for saving me," said the merchant. "But where is Caecilius?"
"My master has hurried to the villa," replied Clēmēns.
"Alas! Caecilius is very foolish!" shouted Barbillus. "Without a doubt, Metella and the children are dead. I am leaving the city as quickly as possible. You hurry to your master!"
